Colonial blockhouses were small, often two-story fortifications strategically located and primarily constructed from wood. These structures featured loopholes for firing muskets and sometimes included swivel guns. Their origins trace back to ancient Greece. This class will explore the history and design of colonial blockhouses in North America, with a focus on the Fort William Henry Corporation’s replica blockhouse, built in the 1950s.
The session will begin with a presentation, followed by a hands-on activity where participants will use tape measures, stadia rods, and slates to measure and record the replica blockhouse, weather permitting. Please bring a jacket and hat.
