In the 1950s, early underwater archaeologist Honor Frost began studying stone anchors in the Mediterranean, developing a typology of various stone anchor types, including hybrid anchors made of sedimentary rocks and wood. This workshop will start with a presentation on the history and types of these anchors, followed by an exploration of killocks (also known as killicks), made from branches, rocks, and rope.
The session will conclude with a hands-on group project to craft several killocks, with all materials provided. Killocks remain in use today in traditional fishing villages in Canada and the British Isles.
Please bring work gloves, a folding chair, a jacket, and a hat.
